During pregnancy, there are many precautions and limitations that women have to do with their diet, which can make food unbearable, not forgetting the frequent nausea, vomiting and aversions that pregnancy entails. Many of the recommendations have been passed down from mother to daughter for generations without a scientific basis to support them. Others, on the contrary, are based on the possible damage that the consumption of certain substances can inflict on both the mother and the fetus, either in its growth and development or in the arrival of pregnancy to term. In this article we are going to talk about Danger to the health of women from eating pate in pregnancy.

During the nine months of gestation it is recommended not to consume raw products such as meat, fish or eggs, and to thoroughly wash the vegetables and fruits that are to be consumed without cooking, due to the possible food poisoning that they may cause.

One of the most dangerous food poisoning during pregnancy is listeriosis, caused by a bacterium called Listeria monocytogenes, and one of the foods that is related to this poisoning is pate.

Pâté is a spreadable paste that is made with liver and fat and is seasoned with wine, liquor and / or different spices and aromatic herbs. In addition, there are vegetable versions, in which the pasta is made from raw vegetables seasoned in a similar way.

When made with raw vegetables, these vegetable pastes carry the same risks as raw vegetables, with the disadvantage that they cannot be washed, so they are not recommended during pregnancy. However, there are other reasons why pâté, both of animal and vegetable origin, should be avoided since we discovered the positive in the pregnancy test.

- The pates have a lot of fat of animal origin
This content of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol is not recommended in the pregnant woman's diet.

- Patés made from liver are even more dangerous
The liver is the organ of the body in charge of filtering and retaining the toxins that the blood can carry, so, in the liver of any animal, not only the toxins but also any chemical compound that they have ingested (antibiotics, hormones, pesticides) will be accumulated , fertilizers ...). Obviously, the origin of the animal is key to cleaning its liver, and not all animals are exposed to chemical compounds.

The liver is an incredible source of retinol (vitamin A), which, although it could be recommended in some cases, during pregnancy can put the life of the fetus at risk and increase the rate of malformations. Consuming excess retinol in the weeks before or during the first weeks of pregnancy can affect the formation of the skull and brain of the fetus, as well as its cardiovascular system. On the contrary, when ingesting an excess of retinol after the first trimester, the malformations are centered in the extremities and in the reproductive and renal system of the fetus.

- Patés have been linked to outbreaks of listeriosis
In addition to the possible risk against diseases that pregnancy entails, since the immune system and the body's natural defenses are weakened, contact with Listeria monocytogenes is extremely serious for the fetus. Listeriosis has flu symptoms that make diagnosis difficult, in addition to the fact that symptoms may not appear immediately.

However, and although listeriosis does not present serious problems in healthy adults, complications for the fetus can range from induction of premature labor to miscarriage and fetal death, depending on the trimester in which the infection is contracted. Furthermore, it is one of the most common causative agents of meningitis in newborns, and its prognosis is not always favorable. In the mother, although the symptoms may be mild, there is an increased risk of bacterial meningitis, an sometimes fatal complication of listeriosis.

Although the risk of listeriosis from consuming patés is not excessive, complications in the event that the paté is contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can be fatal for the fetus, so it is preferable to avoid any food that is related to this bacterium.
