From the year or year and a half it is perfectly possible to bring the child closer to reading. At this age, a boy or a girl can enjoy an appropriate story, with a magazine specifically designed for their level of understanding and maturity.
The initiation in reading it requires calm and a certain amount of dedication. With a young child, the time spent enjoying a story cannot be prolonged too much, because their attention span is still very limited.
Is precise choose a suitable moment, of tranquility, when the child is relaxed, not engaged in another activity or interested in something else, and the adult is not in a hurry. You have to find a suitable environment, a comfortable and quiet space, without too much interference (noise, movements). A corner in which the child can sit next to the adult or on their knees, or lean on a low table, for example, to be able to have the most comfortable posture to focus on.
An attitude that favors the child's encounter with the adult around a story is also needed: the adult must dedicate those few minutes, body and soul, to enjoy the book or magazine of their choice. If he enjoys, the child will notice it and it will be easier for him to concentrate on the activity. You have to accept the reader's reaction: sometimes it will be more dispersed, it will go away and come back, or not ... But you have to continue for a few minutes reading or narrating the story from memory, because sometimes the child, apparently occupied in something else, continues to listen .
And you do not have to force things too much: there are times when the child's spirit will not allow you to propose an activity that requires a certain quietness.
An excellent time is bedtime, when the child is comfortably in bed. A short story, told in a low voice, with a little fluency, will help you disconnect from the activity of the day, relax you and help you fall asleep (which is not always easy on your own).
A child between 1 and 3 years old has a still very limited attention span, so the moments of approaching a book or a magazine will necessarily be brief.
Among the huge editorial offer, you have to choose carefully. Knowing the character of the child, his personality, his incipient tastes (but sometimes very marked) and taking into account his age, the adult has to choose carefully the reading medium: a book that the child can manipulate, a magazine with different content adapted to their age and with large, attractive, recognizable drawings that give you pleasure and also information.
At these ages when the child still cannot read, the image, the illustration, is a source of entertainment and knowledge (in fact the child does a reading of images in which he discovers many objects and many nuances). Therefore, you should also look for books and magazines with good illustrations. Magazines have an added advantage: in the same issue, they offer the child a wide range of illustration styles. Some will like them more than others and, thus, little by little and almost without realizing it, they are also shaping their own tastes.
And to be able to dazzle a child with reading, you have to choose a good time of day when the child is willing; a quiet space, without too much noise or activity, and you have to repeat the scene of sitting or lying down to read with the child until it becomes a habit, such as a good night kiss.
